What if being the Church was less about attending a building and more about becoming a people who live like Jesus, right where they are?

This is at the heart of the Canvas Network, where I have the pleasure of serving on the board.

Different members of the Canvas Network community.

The Canvas Network is reimagining what missional community can look like today. Through pioneering initiatives, experimentation and partnerships, they seek to empower ordinary people to become the Church in their neighbourhoods, particularly through microchurches — small communities centred on Worship, Community and Mission.

Learning and discovery

What makes the Canvas Network inspiring is their willingness to experiment, learn and embrace failure.

Their journey has involved unlearning, adapting and exploring new ways of making disciples and living on mission. They have discovered that making disciples begins with becoming disciples, and that who we are and how we live matter as much as the systems and structures we create.

Their approach is deeply relational: loving people, feeling the pain of their communities and helping others discover how they can participate in God's mission.

Worship around the table

For the Canvas Network, worship is more than singing. It means praying together, opening Scripture, listening for God's voice, sharing stories and eating together.

The table becomes a place where relationships deepen and people discover Jesus together. Worship becomes a way of life, turning hearts towards God and allowing His love to overflow into our neighbourhoods.

Here’s a great example in action: one Canvas Network microchurch launched an initiative this month to provide monthly brunch for residents of a hotel converted into efficiency apartments for people experiencing homelessness as they work towards stability and employment. They plan to prepare food on-site and share a meal with residents, creating space for meaningful conversations, hearing their stories and building genuine relationships.

Growing partnerships

The Canvas Network began in the St Louis region before expanding into Central Illinois, particularly around Champaign, in collaboration with Stonecreek Church. Its partnerships now extend internationally, including relationships with churches and ministries in Ukraine, Poland, Germany and England.

The invitation

Perhaps the most inspiring thing about the Canvas Network is its willingness to ask “What could Church look like?” rather than simply accepting what has always been done.

They’re discovering that Worship draws us towards God, Community teaches us to love one another, and Mission sends that love into our neighbourhoods.

Perhaps that is the invitation for all of us: to open the door, pull up a chair, share a meal—and let's discover Jesus together.
