Cafe Neux

In January Ian and small team from the Proton Foundation visited Oradea in Romania and took time out to sample the coffee at a local coffee house, Café Neux, run as a missional business by New Life Church.

As you walk into the warm entrance hall, the wonderful aroma of coffee hits your senses. The choices begin... Espresso, Americano, Cappuccino, Latte, Macchiato in lots of varieties and lots of flavours; and we haven't even mentioned the teas, frappuccinos and all manner and concoctions of juices and drinks. Hot and cold food and a wonderful variety of cakes and gateaux, all homemade, with only the best, fresh ingredients are also on the menu at Café Neux.

The environment and atmosphere is definitely on par with any quality coffee house, with subtle lighting, welcoming leather sofas, gentle music and of course great customer service from the friendly and attentive staff.

Café Neux was established originally as a missional business in Bucharest, Romania. Less than a year ago, the business transferred to Oradea and is now operating under the cover of the New Life Church, managed by Gheorghe Galea, one the churches founders and leaders. The café now employs six staff members.

Gheorghe told us, “I’ve been in ministry for many years and serving God is never predictable but always rewarding. We’ve done so much to be able to tell people about God and some of what we’ve done worked better that others. It’s funny how all that has changed; I don’t have to stage expensive events in order to have 5 minutes of an audience’s attention; I have people’s attention all day long here at the café.

“I spend anywhere from 9-14 hours at the café. Why here? Because this is my mission field. This is where I get to meet new people daily and this is where I get to talk to people I met yesterday. With some, our conversations lead to trust and friendship while others to questions and dilemmas. I’ve had the opportunity to talk to so many people personally; with some we’ve taken our discussions to a more serious and more profound level yet with other we’ve just started the journey.

I can honestly say that since we opened the café here in Oradea I’ve had more opportunities to share God with people than I’d had in many years. They see me every day, we talk most every day, we share our lives with them and as a result some are closer to God. To some I’ve become a pastor, to some a shoulder to cry on, to others a great barista while for others just a good friend. Out of these friendships something of eternal value may emerge but then again it may not.

There are quite a few business people and lawyers who have turned our café into a meeting place with their clients. We’re the only place in town that is completely nonsmoking indoors and the only place that doesn’t serve alcohol in a country where even McDonalds serves beer. These strange peculiarities provide a good icebreaker with our customers. We’ve had incredible favor with the local media. Many times they’ve advertized our café for free or for a good price. Our best marketing tool however still remains the word of mouth! “

“I find peace when I come here”; “there is something special about this place”; “there is something sweet here”; “the staff talk to us and make us feel at home”. Just some of things people say about Café Neux.

Gheorghe and the team are exploring new ways to expand the business; there are parts of the property that are still to be refurbished which could provide excellent dining areas for an extended food menu. Gheorghe concludes, “Jesus paced himself and invested in 12 people making them world changers. So my wife and I have decided to dedicate our lives to making this place a true blessing for this city.”
